GARY COLEMAN'S 'WIFE' SHANNON PRICE ON HER DECISION TO END LIFE SUPPORT, HIS WILL, LAST WORDS, AND WHAT SHE WILL DO WITH HIS REMAINS
June 7, 2010 (Los Angeles, CA) - ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT's KEVIN FRAZIER sat down with Shannon Price, "wife" of actor Gary Coleman, over the weekend for a new, in-depth interview to begin airing tonight, June 7th. Price answers the questions that have surrounded her relationship with Gary and his death.
THE DECISION TO END LIFE SUPPORT
Shannon Price tells ET she had a directive that was signed by Coleman giving her the authority to make medical decisions. On why she took him off life support so quickly, Price says, "Because the doctors advised me that he wasn't going to make it. His heart was giving out it was going to stop regardless. It was the most difficult decision I've ever had to make in my entire life. Seeing Gary in that circumstance.... it was best for him to go and not suffer. He was already a vegetable." She goes on to say, "He was gone immediately. When they took him off, his heart rate went down to 60 and then when they turned the machines off he was gone that quick."
HIS LAST WORDS
For the first time, Price reveals to ET that Coleman's last words were, "He said, 'I love you and my head hurts.' Those were the last [words] he said to me because he was in a lot of pain."
THE WILL
Price also addresses the reports that Coleman died broke. "We definitely had financial struggles but [we were not broke.]" Price reveals to ET that she has the former child star's will but it uncertain as to who will take over his estate. She tells ET, "He wanted me to have everything."
DOCTORS GAVE COLEMAN LESS THAN A YEAR TO LIVE
Price says doctors had previously given Coleman less than a year to live. "His body was failing him. ... Since he was born, he had all of the kidney problems since he was young."
Price says the former child star had heart valve surgery this past fall to replace his aortic valve and doctors didn't think he would make it. "Well, after he had heart surgery they said he wouldn't make it a year. ... Then he had a new dialysis access catheter put in and they still said that they didn't think he was going to make it a year."
THE 911 CALL
Price still lived with Coleman at the time of his death and called 911 after hearing him fall. She says Coleman went down to make her food when she heard a big smack and ran downstairs to find Coleman on the floor. "I was frantically panic stricken because I didn't know what to do," she tells ET's Kevin Frazier. "I didn't know what the extent of the damage was. So, I ran back upstairs to grab the phone to call 911 and then he was starting to wake up." She says Coleman had no idea what had happened.
In her 911 call, Price tells the dispatcher that she can't go back downstairs to check on Coleman because she has seizures and can't stand the sight of blood. Price says of the 911 call, "I know a lot of the rumors that are out there right now and, you know, nobody else would know what it was like to be in that situation until you're in that situation ... A lot of people didn't think I was there for him and so I would definitely have tried to fix what I had said in the call."
As for what she would say to those people that speculate she had something to do with Coleman's injuries, Price says she would tell them "absolutely not." She adds, "I was upstairs in the bed. You know I wasn't feeling very well myself that day. So, you know, I just asked Gary if he could go downstairs and I wasn't anywhere near him."
When asked if these rumors hurt, Price sighs and responds, "You know it does for the fact that people think that I would've killed him or that I would've hurt him intentionally ... I would take my own life before I would do anything to him ... I mean I would harm myself before I would ever hurt him."
RENEWING VOWS
Despite their differences and divorce papers, Price says she and Coleman had rekindled their relationship. "Gary and I, we had some disagreements on things and we didn't think things through completely all the time. We had rash decisions and when we both filed and everything went through, we decided that's not what we wanted. So, we reconciled and we were actually going to renew our vows very soon."
COLEMAN'S REMAINS
Where is Gary Coleman's body? "His body right now is just at a mortuary until we can get this legal matter situated," Price tells ET. "Gary didn't want a funeral and he didn't want a viewing. He didn't want people to see him that way. So, like I said, Gary is my best interest right now so I'm going to do what he wants."
Price went into detail with ET about her plans for Coleman's remains. Those plans and much more will be revealed as this multi-day series begins on Entertainment Tonight, Monday, June 7th, 2010.
