New York, NY – June 22, 2021 – In an exclusive airing on Tuesday, INSIDE EDITION tracks down the mystery man who was spotted flying on a hoverboard over Times Square, who some have likened to the Spiderman villain Green Goblin.  

The mystery man was dressed in all black with a camera strapped to his helmet as he casually flew over stunned spectators. 

The stunt has captivated the nation. So who is the guy riding the hoverboard?  

His name is Hunter Kowald and he actually designed the hoverboard aircraft himself. INSIDE EDITION caught up with Kowald at JFK airport, who was spotted without his hoverboard.  

“The battery died so I had to ship it unfortunately,” Kowald told INSIDE EDITION. 

Kowald regularly posts videos on YouTube of his flying adventures.  

“It’s a highly engineered device,” said Kowald. “I spent years on this thing to make it happen safely and properly. There’s a lot of safety built into that device so essentially I could have two motors fail and still land safely.” 

It is illegal in Manhattan to fly any drone-like aircraft in the city, but Kowald says he received permission before pulling off his stunt. 

“We had permission and asked for it in advance, and everybody was around us to make sure we did it properly,” said Kowald. 

The NYPD told INSIDE EDITION they are aware of the video and are looking into it.
