Ernie and Charlene Scherer were brutally murdered in 2008. Their pajama-clad bodies were found a week after they were killed. As Peter Van Sant reports in this updated edition of 48 HOURS MYSTERY: “The Country Club Murders,” there was no sign of forced entry and the house wasn’t touched. Ernie was an accountant and real estate investor. Charlene was a lecturer at Cal State East Bay. Investigators eventually focused on Ernie’s son, Ernie Scherer III, a professional poker player who stood to gain a multimillion-dollar inheritance with his father dead.  However, before police could confront the poker player with their suspicions, he ditched his wife and 3-year-old son and went on a cross-country escape. With help from Scherer’s wife, police set out after the poker player, revealing an unexpected twist that changed everything.
