Chris Martinez has been named a correspondent for CBS Newspath, the Network’s 24-hour television newsgathering service for CBS stations and broadcasters around the world. Martinez will be based in Los Angeles. His appointment is effective May 4, 2015.
Martinez joins CBS News from WBBM-TV, the CBS owned and operated station in Chicago, where he had been a general assignment reporter and fill-in anchor since 2012. While there, he covered several stories, including the shooting death of Chicago teenager Hadiya Pendleton and the violence on the city’s South Side, the controversial closure of 50 Chicago public schools; the devastating tornadoes in Washington, Ill., and the introduction of marriage equality in Illinois, which earned him an Emmy nomination.
Previously, Martinez was a reporter and anchor for WFTS-TV (2003-2012) in Tampa, Fla., where his coverage included the Terri Schiavo case, the Space Shuttle program, the disappearance of Caylee Anthony and the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
Before that, Martinez was a reporter and fill-in anchor in Orlando for Central Florida News 13 (2000-2003) and was also a reporter for WCTV (2000) in Tallahassee, where he managed editorial coverage in south Georgia. He began his television news career in 1999 at WCTV as an associate producer.
The son of a Cuban-born father and American-born mother, Martinez is a native of Miami, Fla. He graduated from the Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in political science and communications.
