48 HOURS: “Karrie’s Choice” was Saturday’s #1 non-sports primetime program in viewers and key demographics, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for March 23.
48 HOURS, which was presented from 10:12-11:12 PM, delivered 3.50 million viewers and a 0.9/04 with adults 25-54, the demographic that matters most to those who advertise in news. 48 HOURS was up +50% in both adults 25-54 (from 0.6/02) and adults 18-49 (0.6/03 from 0.4/02) and added +160,000 viewers (from 3.34m, +5%) compared to the previous week. 48 HOURS was up +13% in adults 25-54 and +20% in adults 18-49 compared to the same week a year ago.
Saturday’s broadcast featured Erin Moriarty and 48 HOURS looking into the death of a Corning, N.Y., mother of three and the investigation into what really happened. Michele Neurauter was found in her home hanging from a rope in August 2017. It appeared to be a suicide, though police had some doubts. At the time, she was in a battle over the custody with her ex-husband, Lloyd Neurauter.
The police were not alone in thinking Neurauter might not have killed herself. Neurauter’s mother, Jeanne Laundy, thought Michele was murdered, and pointed the finger at Neurauter’s ex-husband, even though he was more than 2,500 miles away on a job interview in California when Michele was found dead. Police would later learn that before Neurauter flew to California, he was with his 19-year-old daughter Karrie in Rochester, less than 100 miles away from Corning. Police needed to figure out if he somehow got away to Corning to kill Michele, and they suspected their daughter Karrie might know what happened. Police began listening into conversations between Lloyd and Karrie Neurauter.
Months later, Karrie and Lloyd Neurauter were arrested and charged in the death of Michele Neurauter. While not accused of actually killing her mother, Karrie Neurauter was charged with helping her father plan and cover up the murder. Prosecutors maintained that Karrie was brainwashed by her father to help with the murder. She eventually admitted helping plan the murder and was sentenced on a count of second-degree manslaughter to one to three years in prison.
Lloyd Neurauter pleaded guilty charges of first-degree murder, first-degree custodial interference and second-degree conspiracy. He has been sentenced to life in prison.
Why would a child help one parent kill the other parent? Police and prosecutors wrestled with finding an answer.
