Troy Roberts and the 48 HOURS team report on the murder of a Florida father in a story that pits family members against each other and reveals a woman who has been harboring secret about what happened in “Ambushed,” to be broadcast Saturday, March 16 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
48 HOURS: “Ambushed” focuses on the death of David Jackson, who disappeared on June 25, 1988. Family members knew something was wrong when he failed to show up for work and missed an appointment to pick up his brother at the airport. Police took on the case, but the investigation grew cold.
It heated up again in 2003 when a new detective, Donna Velazquez, was handed the file. As part of her work, she put a missing persons poster of Jackson by her desk. By chance, Jackson’s son, John Wolfe, saw the poster during a meeting of the Police Explorers Club, a group for young people interested in police work. He shocked the officers when he told them – he knew the man in the poster, it was his father. And what he would tell investigators would ultimately blow this case wide open.
“He said, ‘I know my mom’s not being truthful,’” Velazquez recalls of her conversation with John Wolfe. “‘I know that she’s withholding information. I know that she knows more than she’s saying.’”
Not so, says Jackson’s ex-wife, Barbara Britton. “David was my first love and my life,” Britton tells 48 HOURS, “and I was always hoping that David would come back.”
Velazquez wasn’t convinced. The investigation would lead her to Britton, her then-ex-husband, Michael Wolfe, and two of his six ex-wives. One of them, Nancy Graham, revealed Wolfe told her years earlier what he knew about Jackson’s death. “I really think his conscience was killing him,” Graham tells 48 HOURS. “It was bothering him.” It was bothering Graham, too, who admits while tearing up, she was sorry for not speaking out earlier.
Michael Wolfe, in his only interview, tells Troy Roberts that Barbara Britton and her father, Harry Britton, were behind Jackson’s death. “Harry said, ‘The only way I want to see David’s face is face-up in a box at Fred Hunters,’ which is a funeral home. He said that more than once,” Wolfe says. He tells Roberts about a plot involving Barbara Britton to lure Jackson to a Fort Lauderdale hotel, how Harry got Barbara a Taser, and how he hid in the hotel room bathroom when Jackson arrived.
Roberts and the 48 HOURS team piece together the story of Jackson’s murder and the investigation through interviews with Velazquez, Britton, Jackson’s mother and brother, John Wolfe, Michael Wolfe, and Nancy Graham. 48 HOURS: “Ambushed” is produced by Patti Aronofsky, Pete Shaw, Tamara Weitzman and Alec Sirken. Anthony Batson is the senior broadcast producer. Susan Zirinsky is the senior executive producer.
