COMEDIAN, ACTOR AND AUTHOR BILLY CRYSTAL TELLS “CBS SUNDAY MORNING WITH CHARLES OSGOOD” HE RARELY LOOKS BACK AT HIS PAST WORK

CRYSTAL TELLS TRACY SMITH: “I’VE NEVER SEEN THE OSCAR SHOWS”

Comedian, actor and author Billy Crystal rarely looks back at his past work, including his famed stints hosting the Academy Awards, he tells Tracy Smith in an interview for CBS SUNDAY MORNING WITH CHARLES OSGOOD to be broadcast Sept. 8, 2013 (9:00 AM ET) on the CBS Television Network.

“You know, I’ve never looked at – with the exception of little snippets – very much of anything I’ve done in the last 15, 20 years,” Crystal tells Smith. “I don’t watch it anymore. I’ve never seen the Oscar shows.”

Crystal, who has starred in such films as “When Harry Met Sally” and “City Slickers,” and has earned critical praise for his Academy Award hosting gigs, says he knows if he does look at those performances, he’ll be critical of his work.

“I know me,” he says. “I’ll take my little shrimp fork and start pokin’ at it, you know? So I’m very happy that if it feels good, then leave it alone.”

Crystal, 65, talks with Smith about his new book, which is part stand-up and part biography, and his career on stage, on TV and in films. He also shares his deep love for his wife, Janice, whom he met when he was 18 and at a time when he was still grieving the sudden death of his father a few years earlier.

“I had been in deep grief from 15,” he tells Smith of meeting the woman who would become his wife. “And I think that’s one of the first times I really smiled and felt, better about life. ‘All right, he owed me one,’ you know, ‘He owed me one.’ And He gave me her.”

CBS SUNDAY MORNING is broadcast Sundays (9:00-10:30 AM, ET) on the CBS Television Network. Rand Morrison is the executive producer.
