Erin Moriarty and 48 HOURS investigate the murder of Heather DeWild and how TV crime dramas may have given her killer enough information to keep police from quickly solving the case in “The Devil’s Twin,” to be broadcast Nov. 16, 2013 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Heather DeWild went missing in on July 24, 2003, after a visit to estranged husband Dan DeWild’s house to pick up a set of insurance cards for their two children and sign a check. The check was never endorsed. The cards never picked up.

Her parents grew concerned when she didn’t return home. Heather’s mother called Dan DeWild, who told her Heather left the kids with him and went shopping – something the concerned mom knew never would happen.

Heather DeWild was never seen alive again. Heather’s father, Dave Springer, a veteran police officer, was convinced something horrible happened.  “I had a really bad feeling about it,” Springer tells Moriarty.

When a detective went to visit Dan DeWild, his twin brother, David, arrived, too, and was quickly told by Dan not to speak to police. The identical twins also shared the house with David’s girlfriend, Roseanne, whom he quickly married after police began checking on the brothers.

“I’m thinking now we don’t have a missing person, we have a murder,” Denver Detective Mark Crider tells Moriarty.

However, there was no murder weapon. No fingerprints. No blood in the house where police believe she was killed.  And there was nothing tying Dan DeWild to Heather’s murder.  Six weeks after she disappeared, Heather’s body was found by a road worker moving dirt on a canyon road.

Eventually the case grew cold, and Heather’s parents felt they would never get an answer to what happened to their daughter. But two years later, a new district attorney was elected and they appealed to him for help. He and his team began methodically going through each piece of information. Then, eight years after Heather’s body was found, Dan and David DeWild were arrested for her murder.

A bombshell bit of information turned the case for everyone. In another twist, prosecutors learned that before Heather disappeared, the DeWild brothers had been watching TV crime dramas and forensic shows. Meanwhile, obtaining forensic investigation was tougher, because the brothers have identical DNA. But did prosecutors have enough to get a jury to believe they killed Heather?

Moriarty and 48 HOURS piece together the mystery through interviews with Heather’s parents, Roseanne DeWild, the road worker who found her body, defense attorneys, prosecutors and investigators. “The Devil’s Twin” is produced by Lisa Freed.
