TIM GAUGHAN NAMED VICE PRESIDENT OF NEWS SERVICES OVERSEEING NEWSPATH

CBS News has elevated two veteran journalists into key positions, it was announced today by David Rhodes, President of CBS News. Kimberly Godwin, a journalist with more than a decade at CBS News, has been named Vice President of News. Tim Gaughan, an experienced journalist, has been named Vice President of News Services overseeing Newspath.

In her new position, Godwin will be responsible for the editorial direction, launch and coordination of all CBS News newsgathering resources domestically and around the globe. She will also continue her role as executive director for Development and Diversity, where she has enhanced CBS News’ profile at conferences around the country and cultivated a strong pipeline of potential employees. She has also developed a lecture series that features top CBS News journalists sharing their reporting experiences with colleagues.

In his new role, Gaughan will oversee Newspath, CBS News’ newsgathering organization providing news and information to 200 CBS affiliates nationwide and to broadcasters around the world.

“These two appointments further strengthen our reporting and news distribution structure,” Rhodes said.

“Kim is a proven editorial leader from her years at the CBS EVENING NEWS and throughout the organization, where she has led the charge in our inclusion and development efforts,” Rhodes said.

“Tim has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to manage, lead and ensure that CBS News has the most accurate and timely reporting presented on all platforms,” Rhodes said.

Godwin has been serving as senior broadcast producer of the CBS EVENING NEWS since 2014 and is the executive director for Development and Diversity. An accomplished newsroom leader and executive, Godwin has helped shape the network’s flagship evening broadcast and the network’s coverage of major national and international events. Godwin was named a senior producer on the broadcast in 2007 and played a key role in developing the CBS EVENING NEWS’ day-to-day and long-term coverage of major news events. She was a key part of the team covering the Newtown, Conn. school shooting, the Boston Marathon Bombing, the 2012 and 2016 presidential elections, Hurricane Matthew, the Orlando Pulse Nightclub tragedy, the eclipse and the mass shooting in Las Vegas.

Before joining CBS News in 2007, Godwin spent more than 20 years as a manager and newsroom leader at some of the top local stations in the United States. She was the Acting News Director and Assistant News Director at WCBS-TV in New York City (2005-2007); Vice President and News Director at KNBC-TV in Los Angeles (2001-2003); Vice President of News Operations for NBC Television Stations (2001); and Vice President and News Director at KXAS-TV in Dallas/Fort Worth (1998-2001). Godwin was also News Director at WOIO/WUAB in Cleveland (1996-1998) and Assistant News Director at WCAU-TV in Philadelphia (1994-1996), and before that, Senior News Producer at WCAU-TV (1991-1993); Executive Producer at WNBC-TV in New York City (1993-1994); and Producer at WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh (1991).

In addition to being a veteran of network and local news, Godwin has spent time as a journalism educator. She was the interim director for journalism at the School of Journalism and Graphic Communication at Florida A&M University (2004-2005) and an adjunct faculty member (2003-2004) teaching newswriting, reporting and ethics. She is currently the Chair of the Board of Visitors of the journalism school at FAMU.

Godwin is the recipient of many distinguished awards, including six Emmys; two Edward R. Murrow Awards; an Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia Award; and a Sigma Delta Chi Award. She is the former chair of the Board of Managers of the North Brooklyn YMCA and member of the Board of Managers of the YMCA of New York City. She is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.

Since 2015, Gaughan was Vice President of Newsgathering, where he was responsible for the launch and coordination of all CBS News newsgathering resources domestically and around the globe. In that position, he was integral to CBS News’ coverage of presidential election cycles, inaugurations and breaking news events such as the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, the shooting of five police officers in Dallas, the terrorist attacks in Paris and London, the mass shooting in Las Vegas and Hurricanes Harvey, Maria and Irma.

At CBS News, Gaughan also managed the digital journalism department, where he handled recruiting, training and mentoring new journalists.

Gaughan joined CBS News in 2011 as senior producer for Special Events and Director of Digital Newsgathering. A veteran journalist, Gaughan has been a key part in reporting on major national and international events including the death of Nelson Mandela, the Papal Conclave, political debates, the Newtown, Conn. school shooting, the Boston Marathon Bombing and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Prior to CBS News, Gaughan was Head of Newsgathering at Bloomberg Television from 2010. Earlier, he was Director of Domestic News for the Fox News Channel. He also served as the national editor and political editor at Fox News. During 2003, Gaughan was the Baghdad bureau chief for Fox News.

Gaughan’s work has earned him an Emmy Award for his work on CBS News’ coverage of the Boston Marathon Bombing and a duPont-Columbia University Award for his contributions to CBS News coverage of the Newtown school shooting.
