“CBS SUNDAY MORNING” BEGINS THE NEW SEASON AS THE #1 SUNDAY MORNING NEWS PROGRAM
“CBS Sunday Morning” Marks Its 613th Consecutive Week in the #1 Spot with Viewers
CBS SUNDAY MORNING began the new season as the #1 Sunday morning news program, extending its streak to 613 consecutive weeks at the top, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Sunday, Sept. 27.
The broadcast delivered 5.14 million total viewers with 840,000 of them in the adult 25-54 demographic. It was also the broadcast’s 209th week in the top spot with adults 25-54.
Jane Pauley anchored Sunday’s broadcast, which featured her interview with superstar singer Mariah Carey. Also on the broadcast, Ted Koppel reported on the legal doctrine of “qualified immunity” and the debate over whether it rightfully protects law enforcement from being liable in civil lawsuits, or whether it is a loophole that hurts victim’s rights. Rita Braver reported on the new nominee to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left open by the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. And Susan Spencer explored the story behind a new statue capturing a historic handshake between Jackie Robinson and George Shuba.
Sunday’s broadcast included Nancy Giles’ nostalgic look at roller-skating, which is having a comeback. Luke Burbank visited with actor Jim Belushi, who is now growing marijuana in the Pacific Northwest. Mo Rocca talked with famed contraption creator Rube Goldberg’s granddaughter about continuing in his tradition. Bestselling author and journalist Jonathan Alter offered a lesson for the times in his new book entitled His Very Best: Jimmy Carter, A Life. John Dickerson of 60 MINUTES previewed the upcoming first presidential debate. Josh Seftel and his mother weighed in on current events.
