Since the discovery of the richest tomb ever found in Egypt a century ago, King Tutankhamun’s tomb has been at the center of rivalry, controversy, and rumor. Part of the fascination with the ‘Boy King’ has always been the suspicion that a curse guarded his tomb, and ill fate would befall any who would defile his final resting place. When British archaeologist Howard Carter broke through the sealed entrance of the lost tomb in November 1922 to reveal thousands of priceless funerary artifacts and the teenage body of Tutankhamun, rumors of the Pharaoh’s revenge consumed the media. When Carter’s benefactor Lord Carnarvon suddenly died, the belief that a curse had been unleashed ran like wildfire. Newspapers hyped this link with scant regard for the facts, and the myth of the mummy’s curse was born.
